Talent is Overrated

Geoff Colvin

I now talk about this with my kids. There are precious few “talents” that are in anyway genetic. The author makes the case that everything we see as talent, and casually label as natural talent, is actually intentionally honed skill that anyone can have if they do targeted, intentional practice regularly.

The difference between an excellent [insert-profession-here] and a famous [insert-profession-here] is hours of practice compounded with purposeful targeting. I’m not a fan of life coaches, but if this author is right, a good coach becomes critical for excelling.
